5 Tips for Booking the Perfect Photography Session

Booking a photography session is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming to say the least. Whether you are booking a family portrait, a personal branding session, a senior session or a newborn session, follow these simple tips to help you make the most out of your session appointment.

1. Plan Ahead for the Best Dates

The first step in planning a photography session is usually the date. If you have a specific date in mind, you want be sure to book as soon as possible to ensure the date is available. Also, consider the date you may need or want to have images in hand. The turn around time for edited images is between 3-4 weeks.

Planning a date ahead will also give you and your photographer more time to plan and prepare for the session you are wanting.

2. Choose the Photographer for the style you desire.

Every photographer has a unique eye and creative style that is their own. It is important to choose one that matches the style you envision for your session. Do a little research and check out portfolios and read reviews. Are you looking for light and airy, moody, bright, timeless? By choosing the right photographer who matches with your aesthetic, you will be happier with the final product.

If you are unsure about styles, reach out and ask for recommendations based on the type of session you are booking. A great photographer will be happy to guide you through these options.

3. Have a Clear Vision for Your Session

Before your session, think about what you want to achieve. Are there specific poses, locations, or props you want to incorporate?

Sharing this information with your photographer in advance will help get the exact photos you want.

Most photographers have a location list on hand. You don't have to have a specific idea in mind, but if you do you can share with your photographer to ensure you get the images you are dreaming of.

4. Consider Timing and Lighting

The time of day plays a part in how your photos will turn out. Most photographers prefer to shoot outdoors during golden hour. It provides a golden hue to your images and the light is soft and warm. Morning sessions are best before 10am. The morning light has a softer cooler hue. Mid-day sessions can be done in fun settings like downtown where there are building to use for shade.

5. Choosing Clothing

I have placed this down the list, but it is most likely at the top of the stress of planning a session. There are many styles when it comes to dressing for a session. For a family session, it is my opinion is to choose a color or a color palette. One that matches your home preferably and dress in that color style. If you choose red, make sure everyone has red on in some way in the photo. That way it will all flow effortlessly. A red hairbow, red shoes, someone else may have red accents in their tie or shirt etc. Feel free to contact your photographer for more help if needed.

Obviously for Senior Sessions the clothing choices will be different. For Newborn Sessions most photographers have everything needed. Stay tuned for another post coming soon where we will talk more in depth about wardrobe and session planning.

Booking a photography session doesn't have to be stressful. By planning ahead, choosing the right photographer and having a clear vision, you are setting your self up for a fun stress free time in front of the camera. The goal is to capture and create beautiful heirloom images for you and your family to cherish for many years. Ready to book your session?
